What Is Somatic Resonance Humming?

And Its Effects on the Vagus Nerve

Most people come into my office describing anxiety as something that happens in their body before it happens in their thoughts.

A lump in the throat. A tight band across the chest. A knot in the stomach. Pressure behind the eyes. A buzzing in the head that has no obvious source.

The instinct, understandably, is to make the sensation stop. Push it down, breathe through it, distract from it, wait it out. And sometimes that works. But for a lot of people, the harder they fight the sensation, the louder it gets — because the fight itself is a message to the nervous system that something dangerous is happening.

Somatic Resonance Humming is a practice I developed for the opposite approach. Instead of trying to get rid of the feeling, you use your own voice to find it, sit next to it, and get curious about it.

It sounds almost too simple. In practice, it changes the relationship people have with their own bodies.

Where It Comes From

The technique is built on Bhramari Pranayama, a traditional yogic breathing practice sometimes called “humming bee breath.” In its classic form, you close your ears, breathe in through the nose, and hum on the way out.

Bhramari has been around for centuries and is genuinely calming for a lot of people. What I have added is a layer borrowed from modern clinical psychology: instead of humming at whatever pitch comes naturally, you deliberately explore your vocal range and pay attention to where in your body the vibration lands.

That small change turns humming from a relaxation exercise into something closer to a tool for self-exploration.

The Wine Glass

Here is the image I use with clients.

Picture two wine glasses sitting side by side on a table. Run a wet finger around the rim of the first one and it produces a clear tone. If the conditions are right, the second glass — untouched, several inches away — will begin to vibrate on its own.

Nobody touched it. It responded because energy in the room happened to match the frequency it naturally responds to.

Somatic Resonance Humming borrows that idea as a metaphor. Your voice produces vibration. As you change pitch, the pattern of what you feel changes with it. A high hum tends to be noticed around the face and head. A lower hum is often felt in the chest or belly. Somewhere in your range there is usually a pitch that lights up the exact spot where you are holding tension.

I want to be careful here, because this is where a lot of wellness content goes off the rails: I am not claiming that a specific frequency mechanically activates a specific organ. That claim gets made constantly online and the science does not support it.

What I am saying is that you have your own subjective resonance points — places where sound and sensation meet in a way that is noticeable to you. Finding yours is the whole point.

Four Steps

The practice moves through four stages:

  1. Locate. Where do I feel this in my body right now?

  2. Resonate. What pitch makes the vibration strongest there?

  3. Hover. Can I stay with the sensation without immediately trying to make it go away?

  4. Regulate. Can my breathing and attention settle while the sensation is still present?

That last distinction is the one that matters. The goal is not a sensation that disappears. The goal is a sensation you no longer have to run from.

How to Actually Do It

Set aside about five minutes. You do not need anything except a place to sit.

Get comfortable. Sit upright but not rigid. Let your shoulders drop, unclench your jaw, soften your belly. Breathe through your nose, normally. You are not trying to take a big dramatic breath.

Find your starting point. Before you make any sound, ask yourself: where in my body do I notice stress, tension, or anxiety right now? Pick one spot — throat, chest, stomach, shoulders, head, wherever. Give it a number from 0 to 10, where 0 is completely calm and 10 is as intense as it gets. Write it down if that helps.

Close your ears. Rest your thumbs gently over the flaps of your ears to soften outside noise. Gently. You are not trying to create pressure, and you should never put anything into the ear canal. If closing your ears feels uncomfortable or unsettling, skip this part — the practice still works.

Hum. Breathe in through your nose. On the way out: mmmmmmmm. Smooth, steady, easy. This is not about volume. If your throat feels strained, you are pushing too hard.

Explore high. Start somewhere in the upper end of your comfortable range. Where do you notice it? Most people feel a high hum around the nose, lips, cheeks, or forehead. Do not force it there. Just notice where it shows up on its own.

Explore middle. Drop the pitch gradually. Where does the feeling move to? Often the throat, neck, or upper chest.

Explore low. Drop it again, into a comfortable low hum. Many people feel this in the chest, ribs, or upper belly. Some feel almost nothing, and that is information too.

Find your spot. Now go back to that place you identified at the start. If the anxiety felt like a ball in your chest, hunt for the pitch that makes the vibration strongest right there. Slide up. Slide down. Up again. You are looking for the moment where something in you goes, oh — there.

Hover. This is the part that actually does the work. Once you have found it, stay on that pitch for three to five breaths. And here is the instruction that matters most:

Do not try to make the sensation go away. Just get curious about it.

Does it move? Spread out? Tighten? Get warmer, cooler? Does the emotional flavor of it change? Does it do nothing at all? There is no right answer. You are practicing the skill of observing something uncomfortable without immediately reacting to it.

Come back. Let your hands drop. Sit quietly for thirty seconds to a minute. Then check in: what do you notice now? Rate that original sensation again, 0 to 10.

And then ask the better question — not is it gone, but does it feel different?

What the Science Actually Supports

I think you deserve to know which parts of this are established physiology and which parts are my clinical synthesis. So let me be direct about both.

Slow breathing genuinely affects your autonomic nervous system

This one is solid. Humming naturally stretches out your exhale, and a longer exhale shifts the balance of your autonomic nervous system toward the rest-and-digest side. A 2025 pilot study of healthy adults found that both slow-paced breathing and humming breathing improved several measures of heart rate variability compared with sitting at rest — with humming performing comparably to slow-paced breathing, but without needing an app or a pacing device. It was a small study, so treat it as encouraging rather than definitive.

Humming does measurably change your nasal physiology

A classic 2002 study found that humming increased nasal nitric oxide roughly fifteen-fold compared with quiet exhalation. That is a striking, real, measurable effect — humming is doing something physical in your upper airway.

But I will be honest: there is no evidence that this particular effect is what makes you feel calmer. It is a fascinating finding, not an explanation.

Interoception really is central to anxiety

Interoception is the technical term for your ability to sense and interpret what is happening inside your body. A 2026 systematic review in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder were the conditions most consistently associated with heightened attention to bodily sensations and altered interpretation of those signals.

In plain language: people with anxiety often are not imagining the sensations. They are noticing them intensely and reading them as threats.

Approaching sensations rather than avoiding them is an established treatment principle

This is called interoceptive exposure, and it is a long-standing component of cognitive behavioral therapy for panic disorder. A 2025 scoping review in Psychological Bulletin covering 132 studies found the strongest evidence for it as part of multicomponent treatment for PTSD, health anxiety, and IBS — with no serious adverse events documented across the literature.

Somatic Resonance Humming borrows this principle directly. The therapeutic lesson is the same: a sensation is not automatically a danger signal.

About the Vagus Nerve

Here is where I want to push back on some of what you have probably read.

The vagus nerve is a major highway between your brain and your internal organs, and it is a central player in the parasympathetic — the calming — branch of your nervous system. That much is true and important.

What you will see all over the internet is the claim that humming vibration massages or directly stimulates the vagus nerve. It is an appealing story. The evidence does not support it.

In fact, the best available test of this question points the other way. A 2026 preliminary study in Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback compared humming breathing against calm humming breathing — the same breathing pattern, but with noise-cancelling headphones to strip out the auditory feedback. The researchers found no significant difference between the two conditions in either breathing metrics or heart rate variability. Their conclusion was that the autonomic effects appear to come from the extended exhalation and the resulting breathing rhythm, not the vibration or the sound itself.

That study is small and preliminary, and one study rarely settles anything. But I would rather tell you what the research says than what would make my technique sound more impressive.

So here is the honest version of the mechanism:

The slow, extended exhale is most likely what is shifting your autonomic state. The vibration and the sound are doing something different — they are giving your attention something concrete and present to hold onto.

That second job is not a lesser one. An anxious mind is usually somewhere in the future, running threat simulations. A hum you can feel in your sternum is unambiguously now. The vibration may not be stimulating your vagus nerve directly, but it may be the thing that keeps you engaged with the practice long enough for the breathing to do its work.

Both parts matter. They just matter for different reasons.

Tuning, Not Forcing

If the wine glass metaphor does not land for you, try this one.

Think about tuning a guitar. You do not force the string to produce the note. You adjust the tension gradually until the string finds it on its own.

Or think about tuning a radio. Your nervous system is receiving an enormous amount of information at all times. Stress narrows the dial toward one station: threat, discomfort, what if, what if. Humming gives you another signal to tune toward. You move slowly through the pitches until you find one that comes in clearly, and then you stay there.

Tune in. Listen. Feel. Stay. Settle.

The attitude underneath all of this is: do not force, explore.

The Five-Minute Version

  1. Locate — Where do I feel this in my body?

  2. Breathe — Slow nasal inhale. Long, easy exhale.

  3. Hum — Mmmmmmm.

  4. Explore — High, then middle, then low. Where is the vibration strongest?

  5. Find — Which pitch resonates with the spot I identified?

  6. Hover — Stay there for several breaths.

  7. Observe — What happens when I stop fighting it?

  8. Release — Open the ears. Sit quietly. Notice what changed.

Who This Is For

I use Somatic Resonance Humming as a supporting technique for anxiety, panic symptoms, stress and emotional regulation, performance anxiety, stress-related muscle tension, grounding, and general mindfulness training. It is especially useful for people who describe their distress in physical terms, and for people who find traditional meditation hard because “just sit with it” never came with instructions for how.

A few honest limits:

This is my clinical synthesis, not an established treatment protocol. The evidence supporting the individual ingredients — slow breathing, interoceptive exposure, attention training — is considerably stronger than the evidence for this specific combination, which has not been formally studied. I would rather you hear that from me than discover it later.

It does not replace real treatment. If you are dealing with panic disorder, PTSD, or persistent anxiety, this is not a substitute for CBT, exposure therapy, EMDR, or any other evidence-based care. It is something that can sit alongside them.

For trauma, go slowly. Turning attention toward body sensations can be activating for people with trauma histories. It can be a useful stabilization and grounding exercise, but it is not a standalone trauma treatment, and it is best introduced with a therapist who knows your history.

Some practical notes. Skip the ear-closing if you have an ear infection or recent ear surgery. Stop if you feel lightheaded — that usually means you are pushing the breath too hard. And if the practice consistently makes you feel worse rather than more curious, that is worth talking through with someone rather than pushing past.

The Point

The principle underneath all of this is straightforward:

What we resist tends to grow more threatening. What we can approach with curiosity tends to become more understandable, and more bearable.

I am not trying to teach anyone to make anxiety disappear. I am trying to help people develop a different relationship with it — one where a tight chest is information rather than an alarm, and where you can hear the alarm without automatically obeying it.

Your voice turns out to be a surprisingly good instrument for that. You have had it the whole time.
